Raisio Group’s carbon dioxide emissions down by 75 per cent – aiming for carbon neutrality by the end of 2023
In 2018, the Raisio Group significantly reduced its carbon dioxide emissions. Total CO2 emissions were down by 75 per cent from the previous year. The company’s industrial area in Raisio is already carbon neutral. Raisio aims to be fully carbon-neutral in its own production by the end of 2023.
- According to the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), food production and consumption account for about one-fifth of the consumers' carbon footprint. We continue our determined work to reduce the climate impact of our products and we have invested in renewable energy, says Raisio’s COO Jukka Heinänen.
With the bioenergy plant completed in Raisio, carbon dioxide emissions declined significantly already in 2017. Carbon-neutral energy produced by the bioenergy plant continued to reduce emissions in 2018 as it was the first full year of operation of the plant. Using locally purchased wood chips, the plant produces all industrial steam and district heating needed in Raisio’s industrial area. For example, Sunnuntai flours, Torino pastas, Baltic Blend fish feeds and plant stanol ester used in Benecol products are already made carbon-neutrally.
- By investing in carbon-neutral energy solutions in our own production plants, we have reduced our emissions by 75 per cent last year and decreased the carbon footprint of our products. At the moment, of all the energy used by the Group, 90 per cent is produced in a carbon-neutral way. We will continue our goal-oriented work towards fully carbon-neutral production, says Heinänen.
In addition to developing energy solutions for its production plants, Raisio encourages its subcontractors to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Raisio reports direct (scope 1) and indirect (scope 2) carbon dioxide equivalent emissions in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol standard.
Lower carbon dioxide emissions and improved energy and material efficiency are the key environmental goals in Raisio's new responsibility programme. Raisio aims to be fully carbon-neutral in its production by the end of 2023.
